The Global Analytical Science team is part of the SABIC Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization and has five regional teams across the globe. The Americas regional (AMR) team, as an integral part of the global team, possesses comprehensive characterization expertise and work across various business functions (SBUs, corporate, manufacturing) to solve technical challenges associated with SABIC’s products, production processes, and customers. The Analytical Science Laboratories are well equipped with an array of analytical techniques in the area of chromatography, elemental analysis, microscopy, spectroscopy, and thermal analysis.

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced professional with a strong expertise in microscopy, surface science, and broad knowledge of polymer characterization to join our team.



The successful candidate for this position is expected to deliver high quality material characterization solutions and methods, particularly for polymers, by applying his/her analytical skills, knowledge of materials, and expertise in microscopy and surface science. The role will focus on developing methods, executing, and coordinating microscopy and surface analysis within the analytical team, across multi-functional teams, and with external collaborators to provide effective analytical support to SABIC business groups including high performance thermoplastics, polyolefins, and other chemicals. The characterization techniques include optical microscopy, SEM, and others such as TEM, XPS and/or ToF-SIMS that require collaborations through universities or other sites.



  • Develop and execute original methods for microscopic or surface characterization of polymers and other chemical materials to support innovation, production, or product applications. Deliver analytical solutions by participating in technical projects and collaborating with internal customers from different disciplines and other analytical specialists. Demonstrate a problem solving mindset.
  • Design and execute experiments using microscopy and surface science expertise, provide in-depth data interpretation, communicate results and solutions to customers, present and publish when appropriate. Translate the knowledge and cross-train colleagues as required.
  • Lead and facilitate external partnership/services to extend existing microscopy and surface characterization capabilities at SABIC. 
  • Stay current on novel microscopy and surface characterization techniques and methods. Maintain contact with relevant instrument vendors. Identify needs, organize and perform feasibility studies and assessments, and drive the acquisition of new instruments/techniques.
  • Ensure equipment availability through timely maintenance and troubleshooting. Follow safety procedure, build and maintain high safety standards within the team.
  • Contribute to team activities in analytical science, participate in cross-functional and global safety, quality improvement and knowledge exchange programs.



  • PhD degree in physics, material science, chemistry or other related fields. Master degree with relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Solid laboratory experience (5+ years) with specialized expertise and experience in microscopy (SEM and TEM) and surface analysis (XPS and ToF SIMS) including operating related instrument, performing sample preparation, and interpreting data.
  • Demonstrated expertise of polymer material analysis (including both polyolefin and engineering thermoplastics) via microscopy and surface analysis techniques is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of advanced technology, diagnostics and troubleshooting of microscopy equipment
