Job Summary

 

Commercializing new technology is core to supporting Functional Form’s growth strategy. The Global T&L Leader will have responsibility for technology, innovation, research, development efforts and technical resource management. He/She will ensure that these efforts are aligned with business unit and financial, strategic, organization and performance goals. 

 

How you can Be the Impact

 

As a key member of the Functional Forms business team, The T&I leader is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of the strategic technology plan for film and sheet based materials in application spaces that go into B&C, Mass Transportation, Specialty Glazing and Electrical and Electronics markets. The T&I leader is also accountable for managing a $7-8MM Operating Budget with excellent controllership and judgment.

 

He/She will help make the T&I function in the FF business to be a leading function by effectively influencing senior leaders with technology plans that enable near term results while paving path for sustained, long-term business growth

 

The T&L Leader must bring a strong external commercialization focus and proven record for streamlining processes, while developing key performance indicators, in order to make technical success synonymous with business success

 

He/She will lead and Inspire a technology organization of 30+ global resources to deliver extraordinary results.  He/She must be market oriented and bring an outward focus to the organization and develop/mentor/rebuild the technology team globally.

 

He/She will enable an appropriate and balanced portfolio of programs with specific objectives to:

 

Growth Focus

  • Exhibit strong business acumen with an understanding of the financial and market implications of new technology development processes
  • Define and execute key FF Technology platforms (includes film, sheet and coatings products & process) and the supporting NPI programs. Work towards importing the business ROI on Innovation in FF though collaborative efforts.
  • Drive new product development to commercialize the next generation of product, system, platform and technical solutions
  • Ensure that Functional Forms has access to new technology and products which can grow the business
  • In a resin agnostic approach and through pipe-line development activities help steer the business into higher margin spaces and polymers.
     
    People/Process Development
  • Build and lead a high performance global research and development team
  • Leads  team to effectively execute and balance accretive and technical service requests to manage business erosion while driving growth.
  • With a sense of market focus and urgency, develop processes that visibly measure and hold people accountable for the completion of projects that drive market and business opportunities for Functional Forms.
  • Ensure that a high level of regional technical and application support is available to support both the business and customers
  • Develop a culture of open innovation to maximize technology capability including leveraging universities, research institutes, and start-up companies
  • Oversee a strategy and program for protecting the company’s intellectual property
     
    Stakeholder Influence
  • Strengthen commercial team partnerships and drive commercial pull through to the market, demanding rigorous customer value propositions and commercialization of existing NPI’s/Platforms
  • Help build an innovative culture in the entire business that encourages and rewards new ideas and ways of thinking
  •   Work with the PM/MarCom teams in an effort to have Functional Forms be recognized as the most innovation extrusion company in the world.
     

Success in the first year includes:

    • Establishing technical credibility by meeting critical technology, platform and new product launch milestones
    • Personal credibility with business team from both a technical and leadership perspective
    • Business performance metrics are reached/exceeded including
      • On Time and on Budget Launches
      • Incremental sales from products launched in the last three years
      • Customer support for activities requiring technical support to stem erosion
      • Business continuity efforts especially in developing a resin strategy for our business
         

What matters to SABIC


 

  • The successful candidate will have 15 plus years of applicable experience in a research and development environment and at least 10 years management experience leading professionals.  A strong background in innovation, commercialization, research, process development, new product development, applications development, customer support and marketing is a must.

 

  • Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Physics, or similar.  PhD preferred
  • The successful candidate will have a track record of strategic technology development, utilizing people effectively and managing tightly against performance metrics that are highly visible.  Most importantly, he/she must have a track record of getting technology from concept through development and production, and into the market in a strategic, economical, timely and predictable manner.

 

  • The Technology leader should be globally and culturally savvy, resourceful, possess a strong work ethic, be innovative, comfortable working in a Business setting with stakeholders from finance, manufacturing, product management, HR and commercial. He/She must be decisive and possess the ability to create a sense of mission and attentiveness to current and future stakeholder requirements in the T&I organization. 

 

      • Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Physics, or similar.  PhD preferred.
      • Experience with process, platform, and product programs
      • Understanding of six sigma and use of tools.
      • Strong communication skills, written and verbal
      • Strong project management skills
      • Strong influencing skills.
      • Familiarity with marketing and commercial skills and ability to interface with customers.
      • Managed an organization involving the staffing, mentoring and development of its personnel
      • Demonstrated strong business acumen with an understanding of the financial implications of new product development processes
      • Leveraged the use of technology as a competitive differentiator in both emerging and mature markets
