Job Summary

The Safety Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining programs that ensure a safe and compliant work environment in the Specialties Units in Mt. Vernon, IN (site) . The role partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and leadership to proactively identify hazards, assess risk, and implement practical solutions that protect employees, contractors, and the community.

 

The Safety Engineer provides technical expertise in occupational safety, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation while supporting the organization’s commitment to operational excellence and continuous improvement. This position plays a key role in creating and maintaining of a safe culture mind-set, incident prevention, safety program development, training, and investigation of incidents and near misses to drive sustainable corrective actions.

 

Success in this role requires strong collaboration and communication skills, the ability to influence at all levels of the organization, and a hands-on approach to embedding safety into daily operations. 

 

How You Can Be the Impact

  • Assist in development and implementation of site initiatives to drive Health & Safety performance.
  • Own and drive one or more SABIC Safety Health Environment Management System (SHEM) Elements/Sub-Element.
  • Key to this role will be to driving Culture, Compliance, Education and Training employees at all levels on regulatory requirements, driving/implementing/improving the Safety Culture per current initiatives and/or future initiatives.
  • May work closely with Medical Department on various cases, including worker’s comp, return to work, fitness for duty. Lead and/or assist in incident investigations or review incidents for thoroughness.
  • Lead, coach and mentor other Supervisors, SHEM Techs, and Leadership on Health & Safety as needed.
  • Create alignment and consistency between units for Health & Safety programs and initiatives. Make recommendations on Health & Safety practices.
  • Provide training and conduct periodically perform audits in the field on Life Saving Rules such as Lock-Out Tag-out, Confined Space Entry, Hot Work, Line Break, Working at Heights, Lifting Equipment, etc.
  • Perform applicable data mining and suggest ideas for areas of concern. Participate/Lead Safety and Health and efforts during Unit or Site Outage
  • Develop, promote and monitor safety and health performance metrics and targets, reviewing and where necessary challenging and coaching to ensure the development of effective and compliant improvement actions, so that Specialties units performance targets, objectives and long term strategy elements are achieved or exceeded and all employees and contractors work in a safe and healthy environment.

 

What Matters to SABIC

  • B.S. in Occupational Safety & Health or related science or engineering field.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years’ experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Certified Safety Professional preferred but not required.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the company as well as external regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, excellent interpersonal skills and experience implementing effective Health & Safety programs / improvements.
  • Physical Requirements: Mix of sitting, standing, walking throughout plant to process equipment, climbing fixed and portable ladders and entering vessels for inspection activities.
  • Needs to comply with site regulations for PPE while in process areas.
  • Occasionally lifting 50 pounds.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

       

Work Availability

Regular, predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. Applicants must be regularly available and willing to work Monday – Friday during assigned hours of operation and such other hours as the company determines are necessary or desirable to meet business needs
