Job Summary 

The Environmental Engineer provides oversight and technical support for the Specialties Units in Mt. Vernon, IN (site) to ensure site compliance with all Federal, State and local environmental regulations, internal SABIC Safety, Health Environment Managements System (SHEMS) requirements and best practices.  This position is responsible for functioning as the subject-matter-expert for environmental compliance and associated equipment operations to minimize waste, reduce emissions, and manage pollutants. This position will provide leadership and coaching to operations and maintenance teams and will actively partner with operations to resolve environmental compliance issues. Responsibilities include but are not limited to reviewing equipment changes within the Management of Change (MoC) process, performing root cause investigations, and driving continuous improvement efforts. This role acts as a bridge between production engineering, regulatory agencies, and company management to maintain compliance and promote sustainability.

 

How You Can Be the Impact

  • Obtain, maintain, and update environmental permits (Air-Title V, Stormwater, Wastewater, RCRA Haz-waste and Non-Haz Waste, etc.) and ensure adherence to all permit conditions.
  • Monitor, calculate, and report on plant emissions (air, water, and solid waste) to regulatory agency and internal SABIC. This includes managing LDAR program and hazardous waste disposal and implementing waste minimization programs.
  • Timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual reporting
  • Provide regulatory and technical guidance to operations personnel.
  • Managen and coordinate the proper storage, handling, transportation and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Develop and conduct training programs to educate employees on hazardous waste management practices.
  • Coordinate with site Emergency Response services to address any spills, leaks, or accidents promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of hazardous waste generation, storage, and disposal activities.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct and assist site during agency inspections, SABIC compliance reviews, and audits.
  • Participate in the site Emergency Response as a subject matter expert on SPCC Program.  
  • Conduct field assessments and audits with the goal of improving the safety, compliance, and culture of Mt. Vernon operations.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and sustainability of SHEM Environment Standard and sub-elements and identify and implement plans. Perform regular internal audits, document and report findings and follow-up on non-conformances.
  • Maintain a technical communication network amongst both internal SABIC sites and external sites to share best practices.
  • Ensure site is meeting requirements of Responsible Care, Operation Clean Sweep and ISO certifications.

 

What Matters to SABIC

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, chemical, or civil engineering or related engineering degree or relevant experience.  
  • 7-10 years of experience working in RCRA and air/wastewater environmental field.
  • Extensive knowledge on waste profile preparation.
  • Must be able to obtain RCRA / HAZWOPER / DOT certification to prepare and submit waste shipping documents.
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and implement complex regulations.
  • Must be certified to operate loading equipment.
  • Proven organization and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills and ease in giving presentations to diverse populations.
  • Ability to negotiate effective solutions to highly sensitive and challenging problems.
  • Proficiency in software such as Microsoft Office Suite is required.

Regular, predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. Applicants must be regularly available and willing to work a rotating shift schedule during assigned hours of operation and such other hours as the company determines are necessary or desirable to meet business needs
