Job Summary

Senior Counsel, Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) is a key member of the SABIC Legal and EHSS teams, with primary responsibility for providing EHSS legal support for EHSS programs (i.e. OSHA, RCRA, CAA, CWA, etc.)  and operations in the Americas region.  Tasks include advising on all EHSS aspects of SABIC activities in the Americas Region, including legal/regulatory requirements, EHSS liabilities, agency investigations and enforcement actions, development and implementation of a compliance assurance program and legislative and rulemaking advocacy. This position should be closely aligned with the sites and regional EHSS teams (inclusive of security and product stewardship) and manufacturing staff in a team-based approach to solving problems.  This position also offers support during crisis management to local and regional teams.

 

How You Can Be the Impact

  • Collaborate closely with the Chief EHSS Counsel, Americas Legal Affairs colleagues, site and regional EHSS leadership, and regional manufacturing leaders (inclusive of security and product stewardship teams) in serving regional EHSS legal needs.
  • Assist sites by preparing legal opinion on applicability of EHSS regulations, prepare periodic reports required by environmental regulations, developing permit applications, negotiating permits and responding to enforcement actions.
  • Establishes initiatives to ensure accurate representation of data in support of business objectives and goals. Assists Chief EHSS Counsel with global EHSS compliance initiatives for the region.
  • Assists regional team during compliance investigations and enforcement activities by governmental agencies.       
  • Participates in industry groups and interacts with SABIC government affairs team.
  • Provides legal advice and counselling to the AMR regional ESG team on issues relating to “E” (environmental) applicable to SABIC in the region. Coordinates, coaches and motivates other members of Legal Affairs to maintain continuity and share information.

 

What Matters to SABIC

  • Bachelor degree & JD from an accredited academic institution (must be in good standing to practice law)                   
  • 8+ years of environmental law legal experience
  • Strong knowledge of EHSS legal / regulatory environment in the Americas region in which SABIC operates
  • Experience communicating legal issues in a clear succinct manner to members of Legal Affairs leadership team and to client groups  
  • Experience working with diverse EHSS and ESG/Sustainability teams and programs
  • Drive coordination and collaboration across Legal Affairs in other regions to assist with reviews and share best practices
  • Experience in compliance assurance, permitting, government enforcement, regulatory advice and EHSS due diligence
  • Record of high level intellectual maturity and judgement
  • Strong process and proven influencing skills
  • Creative problem solver; strong analytical skills
