Molecular Characterization Researcher - Analytical Technology Europe


The Analytical Technology department is part of the SABIC global Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization, with multiple locations in Europe. The analytical technology organization in Europe (>25 FTEs) provides analytical characterization expertise to support T&I programs across Strategic Business Units, delivering innovative solutions for the circular economy, in automotive, healthcare, building and construction, electronics and other markets.


The Chemical Characterization Laboratories are well equipped with an extensive array of state-of-the-art analytical techniques in the area of advanced chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, morphology / microscopy. To strengthen our molecular characterization team, we are currently looking for an enthusiastic, creative and highly skilled analytical professional with broad knowledge in instrumental analysis and proven expertise in the molecular characterization of polyolefins. This job is located in Geleen, the Netherlands.




As a member of our molecular characterization team, you will use your expertise to drive (global) discussions with business, challenge, translate the needs of our technology teams in the field of polyolefin development into analytical solutions, and execute on the analysis required. The equipment in scope includes a number of High-Temperature SEC systems with multiple detection techniques such as IR, RI, DV and MALS, advanced CCD and MMD fractionation techniques for polyolefins such as HT-2D-LC, aTREF, CEF, pTREF and pMMF.


The Scope

  • Drive clear discussions with internal stakeholders and Analytical Science colleagues on translating business needs into analytical solutions related to especially molecular characterization of polyolefins.  Act as a focal point when required, to help facilitate solution-finding on behalf of the business research teams
  • Collaborate strongly with other molecular characterization experts in order to help elevate SABIC’s global expertise
  • Provide technical and personal leadership in the area of molecular characterization and be able to apply them with a hands-on mindset (70 % lab) to support a spectrum of polyolefin R&D activities ranging from synthesis, formulation and compounding, to final application.
  • Contribute to the development of a wide range of molecular characterization methodologies to support SABIC’s long-term vision – translate the needs of our internal customers into long-term sustainable solutions, and personally execute the required analyses.  
  •     Participate in cross-functional and global safety, quality improvement and knowledge exchange programs.



  • Bachelor or MSc with 3+ years experience in the field of polyolefin characterization, specifically molecular characterization.
  • Expertise and detailed understanding of HT-SEC applied to polyolefins with RI, IR, DV and MALS and combinations of these detectors
  • Previous experience with polyolefin fractionation techniques such as TREF, pMMF is preferred
  • Affinity with analytical instrumental analysis e.g. NMR applied to polymers is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of polyolefin synthetic processes, formulation and compounding as well as applications is a plus

  • Advanced skills in MS Excel® or MATLAB enabling development of automated tools (e.g. macros) for data processing and visualization of analytical results.
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis, design of experiments. Experience with statistics software (such as for instance Minitab or JMP).
