Internship Raw material & cost efficiency improvement - Polypropylene plants

Technical – Polymer Process Engineering

Polymer Process Engineering is part of multi-disciplinary organization Technical (e.g. Electrical, Static, Rotating, Instrumentation) which consists of more than 80 employees and is responsible for the safety, operations and maintenance window of the plants and to define long-term strategies and technical solutions to improve efficiency and safety in SABIC's pertrochemical plants at the Chemelot site in Geleen (Limburg).

At Chemelot about 10 petrochemical plants from SABIC are located. These plants have to perform as best as possible in terms or Safety, Environment, reliability, quality and cost performance. A part of cost performance are the variable costs, meaning raw material and utility (steam, electricity, etc.) consumption per produced volume. Part of the responsibilities of the Process Engineers is to ensure optimal raw material efficiency.

JOB PURPOSE & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Part of the variable costs and raw material efficiency of the Polypropylene plants are a combination of feedstock purity from our Chemicals Unit, our return streams (bleeds, purges) to Chemicals, and determine our polymer efficiency. In this area, because of recent changes in the operating window at chemicals, there is an opportunity to improve the cost performance of our Polypropylene plants in the area of our raw material efficiency
  • A process engineering intern is required, in order to create and update the Polypropylene’s mass balance, to align with our Chemicals and Technology (R&D) departments, and to assist in executing trials in the plants to define the best new operating window. The assignment focuses both on monomer efficiency in the Polypropylene units themselves, as well as on the overall variable costs of Polymers and Chemicals.
  • This internship assignment creates the possibility to discuss with process and production engineers potential to establish the mass balance and define the new operating window, as well as our Business and Technology (R&D) colleagues, from both our Polymers as well as our Chemicals Business.
  • This internship assignment can start in as of April 2024, or later in 2024, and will have a duration of 3 Months. This assignment is part of a larger activity and can be flexible to adjust part of the assignment to fit for an internship longer than 3 months, however it is best suited for a 3 months learning internship.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Basic knowledge of polymer reactor engineering, mass balances and process control.
  • Student in Process Engineering or Chemical Engineering on a bachelor or academic level .
  • Candidate should have skills to be able to abstract data from existing systems
  • Must currently be a student at Registered Educational Establishment in The Netherlands and willing to work on-site STC-Geleen
  • Hands on person with willingness to work in Multi-Cultural Environment
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Flexible, creative and independent
  • Good communicating (verbal and written) skills in English and Dutch
  • Internship assignment of minimum 3 consecutive months.
