Within the T&I organization, the Corporate Research Department (CRD) has the purpose to identify and drive the developments of new products, applications, and processes. The High Throughput Experimentation (HTE) team in Geleen is part of the PO catalysis group under the Polymer and Material Science (P&MS) organization within CRD. The HTE team contributes to the development of new materials and catalysts for multiple businesses and products using state of the art polymerization and polymer characterization workflows.

As a research engineer / scientist with focus on high throughput polymer characterization, you will be a member of the High Throughput team in STC-G that is part of the global Polyolefin Catalysis group within corporate technology. You will be working in an international multi-disciplinary team using state of the art polymerization and polymer characterization tools, where you will be supporting technology development projects for the PetChem business in a professional and international technology organization. Your tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Plan, execute and report polymer characterization studies as part of global projects for various research groups using the high throughput workflow and techniques.
  • Developing proposals for hardware, software and protocol enhancements on the existing polymer characterization platforms and new additional techniques.
  • Optimizing and developing new polymer characterization protocols and methods in accordance with project needs.
  • Driving toward the highest standards in quality and consistency through implementing Statistical Process Control for the various characterization techniques.
  • Driving continuous improvement of effectiveness and efficiency of the polymer characterization techniques and workflows, in terms of throughput, consistency, quality, maintenance and costs.
  • Lead first-line troubleshooting and issue resolution of the laboratory platforms.
  • Deliver on project milestones in a multi-disciplinary approach and in close collaboration with various scientists, like material scientists, chemists, process engineers and analytical experts across the globe.
  • Ensuring all your activities are in accordance to SABIC EHSS standards with high commitment for safety and data quality.
  • Functionally leading activities assigned to process operators and technicians.

  • You are educated in Materials/Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering or a related discipline at BSc or Masters level.
  • You have at least 5 years of additional relevant experience in the field of polymer characterization after completing your study.
  • You have practical experience as well as broad theoretical knowledge of molecular characterization of polymers using techniques like SEC, CEF, FTIR and DSC, preferably in the field of polyolefins.
  • You have a solid understanding of the fundamental aspects of chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis of polymers, preferably polyolefins.
  • You have knowledge in the field of rheological characterization of polymers
  • You are able to keep abreast of the state of the art in polymer characterization techniques and gain knowledge of associated fields and disciplines.
  • You are skilled in statistical experimentation (Design of Experiments), statistical process control and analysis of complex data sets.
  • You have a hands-on mentality, a drive to commit to milestones and a pragmatic approach in problem solving.
  • You are able to spot opportunities, develop project proposals and present those in a convincing manner to a variety of stakeholders, both technical and commercial.
