Department

This position reports to the Process Engineering Manager from within the Technical Group at the Burkville site.

JOB SUMMARY

The overall objective is to drive performance improvements in Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS), Quality, Revenue, and Cost through the use of advanced controls systems.

The Process Control Engineer uses computer technology and fundamental engineering skills to achieve key business objectives within Burkville’s manufacturing operations where we safely manufacture resin and engineered thermoplastics which are used around the world to solve many of our customers most demanding challenges.

The Engineer works as a partner with other site teams: working with operations to improve, increase and troubleshoot production; collaborating with project engineers on control specification and design; partnering with EHSS to decrease frequency and severity of incidents; and teaming up with Maintenance and Reliability to discover and address root causes.

Furthermore, the Engineer works closely with other Process Control Organization (PCO) members on initiatives led from within PCO Team – control infrastructure lifecycle management strategies; security enhancements; obsolescence remediation; reliability enhancements; standards development; work process development; and improving performance metrics.

This Process Control Engineer works across operating units and platforms, typically focusing extensively with DCS & PLC systems.

Automated control is integral to the actual physical operation of the plant. Given this, it is essential that the Engineer work in a manner where safety in design, execution, and operation remains consciously and continuously in the forefront.

Job Purpose & Responsibilities:

Maintain automation base and independently identify areas for improvement beyond assigned site and team responsibilities. Evaluate value and costs, and – if the idea has merit – communicate, promote, and take ownership in execution.

Maintain/improve plan to modernize and standardize site PLCs. Work with team members to develop scope of work for obsolescence upgrades, minimizing PLC types, and integration with DCS and Aspen IP21 data historian.

Provide methods and means to improve real-time process control support, troubleshooting, root cause identification, procedures, training, documentation, tools, and spare parts availability.

Fully participate – as either leader or team member – in a wide range of PCO-led initiatives. Examples include alarm management; next-generation DCS and graphic design, strategic control system lifecycle planning, source code management, console lockdown, cyber security process improvements, SIS design specification, automated system log monitoring, control loop monitoring, etc.

Work closely with the Process Control Technicians, who provide first-line support for operations. Exercise leadership in enhancing knowledge transfer both to and from the specialists.

Collaborate with project owners/managers to successfully execute the control elements of site projects: control scope, specification, design, code development, testing, and startup. Projects size varies greatly; approximately 40% of all site projects include process control content.

Maximize effectiveness across multiple responsibilities by utilizing personal success behaviors: well-defined scope, cost / benefit evaluation, prioritization, effective communication including responsible pushback, leveraging others, team building, etc.
