Microscopy Lab Technician

The Global Analytical Science team is part of the SABIC Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization, with three locations in Europe. The European team (~26 FTEs) provides analytical characterization expertise to support T&I programs across Strategic Business Units (SBUs). The Analytical Science Laboratories are well equipped with an extensive array of modern analytical techniques in the area of advanced chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, morphology / microscopy and thermal analysis.

We are looking for a highly skilled analytical technician to reinforce our team and bring additional expertise in microscopy analyses for thermoplastics, polyolefins, and other sample types. This job is located in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands.

 

The Role

Your role will focus on sample preparation and execution of methods, ensuring good equipment operability and calibration, troubleshooting equipment as needed, and working in close coordination with other experts to provide support and enable business continuity for all the business groups (including various polymers, industrial chemicals, and other SABIC focus areas).  Prioritization and effectively dealing with different dynamics and timeframes in projects from early phase development to production and manufacturing will be a key to success.

 

The Scope

  • Provide technical support to internal customers for market, production, or product development support. Perform requested analyses, focusing mainly on the use of optical microscopes, electron microscopes (SEM, EDX, TEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), with high quality and on time delivery.  Activities will include sample preparation such as cryo-microtomy, mechanical polishing, solvent extraction and etching, and polymer staining.
  • Understand, grow and develop technical ability displaying critical thinking skills.  
  • Engage with stakeholders to define analysis planning and sample prioritization when needed, and in collaboration with internal customers from different disciplines and other analytical specialists suggest additional testing with a problem-solving mindset.
  • Ensure equipment availability through timely maintenance and troubleshooting. 
  • Communicate early and often with stakeholders and customers in case an issue requires more time to resolve.
  • Contribute to knowledge retention activities, including report writing and occasional scientific presentations for an internal audience.
  • Cross-train colleagues as required, and become cross-trained as well.
  • Contribute to team activities in analytical science, participate in cross-functional and global safety, quality improvement and knowledge exchange programs.

 

Your Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Applied Science, or related field with at least 3 (preferred 5+) years of microscopy experience in either an academic or an industrial environment.
  • Proven sample preparation experience for electron microscopy analyses is required.  Sample preparation for polymer microscopy analyses is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of good lab practices to ensure high quality data generation
  • Relevant hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting microscopy instrumentation is a plus.
