Manager, Turn Around
Job Purpose
The Turnaround Manager leads the planning and execution of turnaround (TAR) events, maintenance turnarounds, and line outages. Ensures that the Turnaround Governance is up to date and implemented. This role spans the entire process, from scoping and preparation through execution and post-TAR closeout, ensuring that all work is completed safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards, minimizing downtime and supporting plant reliability.
Managing Major Strategic Turnarounds concerning mandatory inspections, plant maintenance, plant changes and projects that require the plant or systems to be absolutely free of chemicals.
- You will lead the flawless execution of the Turnaround Scope according to agreed KPI’s on Incidents & Injuries, Schedule and Cost.
- You will collaborate with other SABIC manufacturing sites, share and translate best practices from and to the other Sites.
- You will be the linking pin between the TA team on the one side, and the Site Leadership Team, operational workforce, contractors, and other major stakeholders on the other site.
- You will also ensure maximum operational availability during the pre- and post-turnaround production period.
How You Can Be the Impact
- Safety Leadership (EHSS): Serve as a safety role model, ensuring strict adherence to EHSS (Environment, Health, Safety and Security) policies, contractor safety plans, and life-saving rules.
- Implementation and adherence to the Turnaround Governance structure and standards.
- TAR Planning & Preparation: Develop a robust turnaround strategy, including defining scope (scope freeze/challenge), work packages, logistics plans, and long-term scheduling (12–18 months in advance).
- Integration of site projects and operational activities which are related to the Turnaround period.
- Execution Management: Timely development of a strategic construction plan, organizational needs and processes. Lead the day-to-day execution of the outage, coordinating maintenance crews, contractors, and internal plant personnel to meet the "first-time-right" standard.
- Budgeting & Cost Control: Develop accurate cost estimates and maintain control over turnaround expenses (materials and labor) to meet financial targets.
- Schedule & Risk Management: Utilize planning tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) to monitor progress, identify bottlenecks, and mitigate risks associated with the critical path.
- Contractor Management: Oversee major mechanical and fabrication contracts, ensuring contract compliance, quality of work, and effective labor utilization.
- Communication & Reporting: Present regular updates to the site leadership team regarding Turnaround progress, status, metrics, and budget.
- Closeout & Improvements: Phased approach in process and performance evaluation for continuous improvement. Complete post-TAR evaluations (lessons learned) and document equipment records to improve future performance.
What Matters to SABIC
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 8+ years of experience in a petrochemical or refining facility, with at least 3-5 years in Turnaround planning, maintenance, or operations.
- Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading large teams (direct and contracted staff) in high-pressure turnaround environments.
- Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of plant maintenance practices, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and SAP PM.
- Behavioral Skills: Highly goal-oriented, assertive, resilient, and skilled at influencing cross-functional teams.
- Has some background in Maintenance and / or projects.
- Is capable in getting, enlarging and sustain commitment of the people in terms of safety.
- Pro-active and result driven mindset, including proven perseverance.
- Is sufficient in the Dutch and English language in both speaking and writing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal project management certification (e.g., PMP, APMP).
- Experience with contractor contract negotiations.
