Internship Engineering Thermoplastic Product (ETP) Development

DEPARTMENT
The ETP Material Development team within the SABIC Technology & Innovation department, located in Bergen op Zoom is responsible for innovation of new products and maintenance of the existing ETP product portfolio and consists of 21 persons with different educational backgrounds.

JOB PURPOSE & RESPONSIBILITIES
SABIC has a broad portfolio of flame retardant materials. The current portfolio differentiates between halogenated and non-halogenated materials, which are compliant to existing industry regulatory norms. Challenging regulatory dynamics in the context of Safer Chemistry (E.g. use of PFAS and Substances of Very High Concern) ask for a redesign of several of our products, for which we are looking for an enthusiastic- and inquisitive intern who can help us in developing a small scale screening protocol for new advanced compliant flame retardant solutions in polycarbonate.
The initial step is to perform a scientific literature search on small-scale characterization techniques used for screening purposes of flame-retardants. Findings are to be summarized in an intermediate report and presented to the project team.
Then, validation of these techniques on the basis of existing flame retardant systems is to be independently executed in SABIC laboratories. The person will have exposure to available analytical- and thermal characterization techniques as well as small scale compounding and molding processes.
Subsequently, evaluation of new candidate flame-retardants, commercially available and/or newly synthesized, will be the final step during the internship period.

Expected start: September 2024. Duration 6-9 months
